Rizal Day 2013 marks the 117th anniversary of our National Hero Dr. Jose Rizal’s martyrdom at Luneta. It is also the 100th year of the Rizal Monument having been erected in 1913. The monument has just been declared by the National Museum as a National Cultural Treasure and a new marker installed by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines. Leading the day’s commemoration at Rizal Park were Vice President Jejomar Binay and Manila Mayor Joseph Ejercito Estrada. The new National Flagpole, at a height of 150 feet was also hoisted with a newly fabricated giant flag. A nationwide simultaneous flag rising ceremony was held at exactly 7AM, the time Rizal was executed by firing squad. President Benigno S. Aquino III commemorated the event at his province’s Rizal Shrine in Tarlac City. The nation also remember the victims of the deadly Rizal Day bombing in the year 2000.
